100% Ribolla Gialla
Bengier Vineyard • Napa Valley
This wine is made from the venerable Bengier (formerly Vare) Vineyard, one of the first (if not the first) plantings of Ribolla Gialla in California.
We made two completely different styles of Ribolla Gialla in 2020, a white wine and a skin-fermented wine. This is our skin-fermented version. It’s an exciting and thought-provoking wine that’s excellent with flavorful food.
Taste
Dried apricots, sour cherry pit, nutmeg, citrus pith
Story
Vineyard
The Bengier Vineyard sits at the base of the Dry Creek canyon in Napa, which provides a steady flow of cool air at night. The Ribolla planting was grafted over in 2001 by Ribolla pioneer George Vare from Friulian budwood. Farmed organically by the Matthiassons.
Winemaking
The wine was fermented whole-cluster in open top containers. Punched down by hand twice daily. After pressing, the wine was aged “sous voile” in partially filled neutral French oak barrels for 10 months without ever being topped, to encourage the development of a veil of surface yeast. This technique contributes spice and nuttiness and helps soften the tannic nature of skin-fermented Ribolla. Sulfured ever so lightly a several weeks after pressing.
